My youngest sibling turns nine today. We weren't sure where we going to take the picture, but when you're driving around New Zealand, it doesn't take long to find an interesting location. About halfway through our drive from Lake Tekapo to Hokitika, we saw huge, wavy boulders sitting on a hill, and thought it would be a good place to take pictures. They turned out to be part of a national park called
Kura Tawhiti, and we were able to climb on the boulders to get our picture with the sign instead of just standing in front of them. The pictures of us on the boulders were taken too far away to see the sign clearly, but there's a closeup at the end.
Climbing...
Magge also did some climbing for her shot
Closeup of the sign
HAPPY BIRTHDAY LIAM! Those boulders are fabulous, just amazing. I love the bird on the sign, I am assuming some type of guinea perhaps indigenous to New Zealand or that part of the South Pacific? At any rate, Liam enjoy every bit of your day-as I recall 9 is a very cool year. Love to everyone
ReplyDeleteOh,thank you, thank you,THANK YOU!!!!!!!!I love this!!How did you know I like climbing? The boulder at the top of the mountain looks like a fish.(hardy, hardy, hardy:p:p)
ReplyDeleteOn my special birthday poster the bird is a Kiwi bird and the stars in the New Zealand flag represents the Southern Cross constellation only seen in the Southern Hemisphere. Have you seen it since you been in that area? Please try take a picture
Land of the giants - that's what these limestone boulders look like! Did Magge climb in her bare feet? I don't see any shoes or sandals on her feet in Liam's birthday sign picture. Wild thing! *¿*
ReplyDeleteI should have taken the year off myself to read about everything that you are seeing and visiting. Even then I don't think it would be enough time to discover all the wonders in this world.
Liam's birthday poster is so reflective of New Zealand. Usually I wake Liam up for school but not today. He couldn't wait to see the surprise awaiting him on your blog. He was jumping up and down and couldn't stop talking about those boulders.
Thanks for making his day so special.
Love ya, xo
Hello Birthday Boy. Liam you start practicing climbing and soon you can join them.
ReplyDeleteGreat boulders.
Again Happy Birthday!

Happy Birthday Liam. Heard you had the biggest milkshake ever last night. Hope it was the most delicious shake ever, which it should be since mom made it.
ReplyDeleteColin
We have seen the southern cross. The day Magge made your sign, we were wondering what the stars meant, and that night we took a tour at an observatory and the astronomer pointed out the southern cross. It won't come out well in a picture - you need a special camera to take good pictures of stars. At the observatory, we signed up to get a picture or two sent to us, and we'll pass them on to you.
ReplyDeleteNope, no shoes on Magge's feet. I climb better that way!
ReplyDeleteAnd you really do study those pictures! Nothing gets by you :-)
ReplyDeleteOh, and my climb was harder than Jeff's though you really can't tell in the picture he took. I also got up to where he is in his shot - that's where we ate lunch and we have a picture of me up there too.
ReplyDeleteYup, always studying those picture making fish.
ReplyDeleteI do scrutinize these pictures as closely as Liam does except I don't see any animals or caricatures lurking in the background or taking some form or other as he does.
ReplyDeleteYour climb was harder because you weren't wearing shoes my dear. If you got up to where Jeffrey climbed how harder could your climb have been? I love the nook where you are sitting and holding Liam's sign. Looks pretty cozy.
Aw:) How sweet. Those boulders sure look grosteque. Why were they like that? Better yet, how did they get there? Have you seen any kiwis yet in the New Zealand area yet? Love you two oh so much:)
ReplyDeleteMY definition of grotesque-
ReplyDeleteadjective
1.odd or unnatural in shape, appearance, or character; bizarre.
I did two climbs. The one Jeff did and then he couldn't get into the nook area.
ReplyDeleteKiersten, despite my best efforts, we have not seen any kiwis yet. You're brother is not as big an animal lover as you and I are, so he's not being very helpful. You and I will have to do an animal tour of the world.
Magge got up there bc I let her step on my shoulder.
ReplyDeleteKiersten, the boulders are made of limestone, which is soft and easily (relatively) shaped by water. The caves we explored were also made of limestone.
