Our time in Sydney was lazy by design because we've been constantly on the move since leaving Santiago at the beginning of March, not staying in any one place longer than three nights during that span, and had a two week, 2,000 mile road trip planned from Brisbane to Cairns and back. To add to the fun, we're bringing along Lorena as a third wheel, and all three of us are staying in a Jucy Choppa. What's a Jucy Choppa? A conspicuously painted camper van with a hip name (you know it's hip because it's spelled incorrectly) that likely belonged to a soccer mom (or rugby mom, or whatever the equivalent is down here) in its previous life. If you're curious about the sleeping arrangement, the photograph below should explain everything. Lorena is sleeping on the roof.
On Syndey, we picked up our Jucy in Brisbane and immediately set out north with no plans except we knew we wanted to SCUBA dive and snorkel in the Great Barrier Reef and wanted to try to visit Fraser Island and the Whitsunday Islands. We didn't even know where we would be sleeping that night. While we were on the road, Lorena suggested we go to Mooloolaba on the recommendation of a friend. The town and beach were pleasant, but not spectacular - it's the kind of place where it'd be nice to stay for a week with the family, but not the kind of place for which you travel across the world. We didn't have time to soak it in anyway, though, as it was getting dark and we needed to find a place to stay. Thinking we'd be able to pull off the road somewhere and sleep for free, we drove around for over thirty minutes, only to be confronted with "no camping" signs, so we broke down and paid $40 to stay in an RV park.
The next day, we took a short walk to see some waterfalls in Buderim Forest Park, and then it was back to the road. The plan was to get to Yeppoon, but it was getting dark and we came across a free campground on the side of the highway. Magge made us dinner on our gas burners in the dark, while we tried our best, and failed, to keep flies out of the vehicle. There weren't any tables in sight, so we step up the tiny table in our fly-infested Jucy (top right circle in the Jucy picture) and had dinner. The experience wouldn't have been complete without our washing the dishes in the dark campground bathroom, with only the dim glow of our reading light (thanks, Mom!) to show us what we were doing. Did I mention it was free?

We were the only people on this beach. I guess the locals don't like brown water either.

So this was not Tahiti!. Keep searching the best is yet to be. Massive open spaces and it looks like it is all yours. Miss you guys. I have started planning the Croatia trip. Can't wait. Be sure to get your list of goodies to momma and pappa bear so they can pack their ditty bags full of needed items for survival. Way cool vehicle.

I love the Choppa, what a hoot. The waterfall pictures are lovely. Brown ocean, yuck! The great barrier reef awaits, and promises to be spectacular I am certain. Heard yesterday from friends who were in Sydney when you were, you probably passed one another on the street! Have to get to work. Thanks for the post Jeff, you are the best travel guide we have ever had. Love you guys
ReplyDeleteMaybe the highlight of this road trip will have been spending time with Lorena and making the most of it. She must also have a sense of adventure to sleep on the roof of the van! You have been blessed with seeing so many awesome places just the two of you, except when Marcia and Lee visited, enjoy every moment you might be surprised by serendipitous discoveries.
ReplyDeleteAnd don't forget the Great Barrier Reef is awaiting your arrival! Oh the sights you shall see. I think it's a good thing that the road trip is low key so you can fully appreciate the snorkeling activity amidst the abundance of coral beauty.
Lots of white ibis birds in the crocodile minefield picture. Were you able to spot any crocodile? How about kangaroos? You would expect to see loads of them across the countryside.
Please post pictures of you, Magge and Lorena traveling in this Choppa.
We haven't seen any crocs, but have seen some kangaroos on the side of the road - mostly dead ones. The trip has gotten better, will try to post about it today.
ReplyDeletePoor kangaroos! Man, I always wanted to go to Australia. It doesn't seem as appetizing as it did before. Make sure to take lots of pictures of the Barrior Reef! Have you played a digeradoo yet? Are the jucy cars pronounce Juicy? Love you!
ReplyDeleteKiersten, we have not played a didjeridoo and I don't think we will before we leave. Jucy is pronounced juicy. It's just cooler is you don't spell it correctly.
ReplyDeleteI am with Marcia and Lucie, I LOVE the jucy vehicle!!! That thing is awesome, and I bet you feel pretty awesome driving around in it, huh? I'm glad to know that you guys have someone else to travel with. It's always nice to have a partner in crime. :)
ReplyDeleteMiss you both mucho! And Jeff, I feel your pain about being rusty with the French (from your Tahiti post). I sometimes have to speak French with guests here, and my brain just mixes Spanish and French together. At least you were trying, and that's what counts!
Finally!!!!! Yay!!Your in Australia! I Really wanted you to go to Australia. When you get back to Brisbane, if you see or go couch surfing you find GIRL named Ellie Spurgin or the Spurgin Family try to pick them. She was in my class.
