Puppet Show

Our last night in Vietnam, we took in in a Vietnamese water puppet show.  This traditional art form originated close to 1000 years ago on flooded rice paddies in North Vietnam.  Even though we couldn't understand any of the narration, we still enjoyed it for the most part.  I'm glad, though, that its one hour runtime wasn't any longer, as I was starting to get fidgety.

My favorite part was a dan bau solo during the musical prelude:

  1. Fun to see. Our friend Gail Sterne had told us about the water puppet show, and said everyone who went to Vietnam had to see it. Thanks for sharing the YouTube links. A friend set me a picture tonight of the Croatian countryside, we are beginning to get excited. Love to you both.

  2. Puppets gone fishing... Makes me want to break out my fly rod. I can see how an hour might be enough. All looks fun though.

  3. Funny how you can take only so much of a good thing but spend innumerable hours lost in pure enjoyment watching football or playing games on an ipod. ;) Life is surely funny that way, n'est-ce pas? Glad to see you included some great cultural entertainment in your hectic schedule.

We were traveling today to get to Nanny's place and that is why Marcia and Dad posted before me. At least I posted before Lee. LOL
    Love ya, xo

  4. Marcia posted from her phone. Sadly I do not have one only an Itouch. We got home late last night and I did not get time to get on. So I guess I am last this time.
Puppets were fun. I have seen a show on line when I was looking for things to do there.
Keep going and enjoying what a trip.
Speaking of puppets, I used to be in a puppet troop where we had big mouth puppets (I know that will bring a response from someone). Mine was a bald headed man with a red beard. His name was Eli, he was a mountain man and wore overalls.
We talked to Rachel last night and she sends her love to everyone.

  5. Puppets + big mouth = Lee? Is this what you expected Lee? :)

  6. I don't know exactly why, but these videos made me laugh so hard. What exactly was the puppet show trying to tell you- was it a tale of the past?

  7. There were about 15 different parts. They either seemed to be vignettes covering daily life (such as fishing or farming), or were Vietnamese legends.

  8. I loved both of the shows! the song sounded like it sas from China, not Jordan. Is Jordan (I don't know how to word it properly!)chinesey.I thought the puppet show was kinda funny. I don't know how it makes sense!People are standing in water while people are riding boats. Is that how they used to catch fish, in buckets?(sorry, i'm not trying to be insuting to the culture:(
    Love You

  9. Sorry, I meant Vietnam

  10. Liam, Vietnam has a long, intertwined history with China. There are Chinese influences in its culture, but at the same time it is distinct.

The fishing scene was supposed to be funny. I didn't get it on video, but the man kept accidentally "catching" the woman. You would have liked it and should go if you ever visit Hanoi.

  11. It was a pretty good show, considering how potentially silly it could have been. Even the seats further back weren't too bad, except for people occasionally holding their cell phones up to capture photos.
