The Wall

I've hit it.  I suppose most people who engage in long term travel do, but until now, I had not experienced a drop in energy since since left home seven months ago.  There was just too much to see, too much to do.  Now, sitting in Phnom Penh, I'm feeling a little worn down.  Maybe it is because we've been constantly on the move since leaving Trujillo just before Christmas.  Maybe it is the incessant heat and humidity in Southeast Asia.  Maybe it was the three days spent in a hotel room in Battambang tending to my dengue-infected wife.  Regardless of why, it is coming at a bad time, as tomorrow we leave for Vietnam, one of the countries about which I was most excited.  We'll probably just take our time over the next little while and try not to do too much.  If we find a decent beach, we'll probably take a few days to relax.  We were supposed to be in Thailand right now, with a virtual smorgasbord of the world's best beaches from which to choose, so maybe the blame for the wall goes to the Thai coup-happy culture.

  1. Go to the beach and chill, although chill is probably not the operative word to use for someone relaxing in SE Asia. Your fatigue is totally understandable. Maybe it is good that we did not make it to Vietnam after all. Love ya sweetie

  2. I was 'awonderin' how long you guys could continue to push yourselves relentlessly to see everything of interest in each place. You certainly deserve a little break before you pick up the pace again. Even the spare time will bring you good stuff to see and experience.

  3. I have not know how you both have done this so far. Marcia & I travel a lot but only for shorter segments. Hopefully seeing your family will spark something.

  4. Hopefully it doesn't take that long, Lee, but if it does, family will surely help.

  5. Hi Guys, not sure if you remember but we met on Fox Glacier in NZ. Been checking your blog from time to time for South America tips... thanks very much! We are in Bolivia at present and loving it, but are well aware of 'The Wall' too. In Vietnam we took a few days out to relax here: after travelling up from Ho Chi Minh. Cultural it ain't, but the place is out of the way, the beach good, and its run by a Canadian-Vietnamese couple who provide total R&R and good food for the tired travellers that tend to wend past this way. The stars at night are fantastic and the beach bonfire a chill-out. Once in Nha Trang they picked us up by mini-bus-cum-taxi. Hope whatever you decide to do you're both feeling better soon. With our love, Simon and Ruth

  7. Hey guys!
We can totally relate to hitting the wall! We did as well, in Peru, and ended up not leaving our hotel room for several days, just pampered ourselves. It's hard for people to believe that traveling is difficult, but it is! Rest up, relax, eat lots of good food, and try to stay put for a few days. Your energy will come back :-)
