The Pompidou Centre is Still the Ugliest Building in Paris

When the Pompidou Centre opened in 1977, it created a stir for its... uh, creative architecture.  Built in the high-tech style, the building's guts - elevators, pipes, steel frame, etc. - are on the outside, clashing violently with the surrounding Gothic and Renaissance buildings.  It houses a modern art museum and a library, and fans of the building says that the design allows for open and unencumbered exhibition space.  They also say that as a piece of art, it's supposed to challenge our sensibilities.  I don't care what the spin is - the Pompidou Centre is, just as it was when it opened 33 years ago, the ugliest building in Paris.
Obviously not a fan

Blends well with surroundings

  1. It looks like it could still be under construction. Not a pretty sight at all. I concur with you Jeffrey it would be one of the ugliest buildings erected in Europe. Seulement les français...

  2. Yep, it's horrid! Is that a covered walkway with the red underbelly on the outside? Looks more like a make shift roller coaster. Modern "art" is often difficult to discern.

  3. When Marcia and I went to Paris in 2001 we decided not to see it. Thanks for the views. Ugh!
Que pensaient-ils. There was much talk when the glass pyramid was added to the Louvre. But I think that one was okay. The Pompidou Centre looks like one of Nathan's lego buildings from the early days when he did not folloow directions.

  4. Did you actually go inside it? The exterior may not be so pleasing, but how about the inside?
    Love you both!

  5. No, Kiersten. We're not into modern art so we didn't bother.

  6. Well, Its very-neat. Like mom said, it looks like the very first step of construction. It is kind of interesting though. what is that thing that looks like a slide, its slant, sideways, slant, sideways slant. But on the bright side of the building, its colerful. What are those tubes that goes up,curve, than sideways and has a-window is it?
    Love You,
    Liam

  7. Liam, that thing that looks like a slide is a staircase. Those tubes are air vents.
