Happy Birthday, Daddy!

Though my dad generally does not like to acknowledge his birthday (Peter Pan!), I couldn't possibly let him think that I had forgotten him on his special day. OK, yes this is a day late, but I cannot be blamed for shoddy internet in South Africa.

Yesterday, Jeff and I went and strolled around the Kirstenbosch Gardents, which were incredibly beautiful. As you can see from the picture, the mountains, which can be seen from all over Cape Town, are really what make this place so special.

"Happy Birthday" on the sign is written in Xhosa, which is one of the eleven official languages of South Africa. I chose to do the sign in Xhosa because that is the language most of the children we are working with speak.

  1. Oh my stars, the yellow flower is fabulous, so unusual. We could go on and on about Jim and his not wanting folks to know it is his birthday, but I will hold the stories back and join you in sending him good cheer!

  3. Well, Jim, your secret is out and now we all know you have a birthday every year and it's on October 19th! Thanks to Magge's thoughtfulness and another wondrous sign we can all wish you a very Happy Birthday, Jim!

Magge - where names written beside the flowers and trees growing at the botanical gardens? That yellow flower looks like an art project I would have done with the kids. Did you see any baobab trees?

  4. The names were written, but we didn't look too closely at them.

We didn't see any baobab trees. There's a large one in the conservatory, but we didn't make it into that section of the gardens.
